»Artists off the Mainstream« (En)

M3NSA & Wanlov the Kubolor, M.anifest, Okhiogbe Omonblanks Omonhinmin (Moderation), Poetra Asantewa

The rapper M.anifest, the poet Poetra Asantewa and the experimental duo FOKN Bois are all artists from Ghana who do not make Afropop, which has been the absolute mainstream in Ghana for decades, instead having chosen a more experimental path. Nevertheless, or perhaps precisely because of this, the three acts – all also performing live at Pop-Kultur – are successful in their own way in their very musical country of residence. In this talk, they give insight into Ghana’s alternative music scene, which has developed into a young, inspiring and revolutionary melting pot in recent years. Joined by Nigerian host and interdisciplinary producer Okhiogbe Omonblanks Omonhinmin, they talk about their paths and personal experiences and discuss what it’s like as an artist to break with musical traditions, to bring in political views and to create new genres.

Collage of four photos side by side shows black people read as women and men. They are in this order from left to right: M.anifest, Poetra Asantewa, Wanlov the Kubolor, M3NSA, Okhiogbe Omonblanks Omonhinmin. M.anifest is shown in a portrait up to his waist against a pine green background. He wears a dove gray collared shirt with chest and side pockets buttoned almost to the top. He is looking head-on into the camera with his lips closed. A black brimless hat sits on his head. Poetra Asantewa sits in a white t-shirt outfit against a light background of wood. The photo is cropped to show the left side of her body and face. She has her arm resting on her knee and her hand under her chin. She is looking into the camera with an implied smile and closed lips painted red. She wears her hair in thick, intertwined braids. Wanlov the Kubolor stands half-profile facing left in blue spotlight. He has his eyes closed, on his head a Ushanka cap with fur and earflaps, his upper body is exposed. He holds a microphone to his beard framed mouth and smiles slightly. M3nsa in the picture next to it also holds a microphone to his mouth. He stands in blue spotlight pictured up to his waist in half profile, wearing a light parka, glasses, beard and a short afro. He has narrowed eyes and is singing into the microphone. He has his left arm bent at his side. Okhiogbe Omonblank's Omonhinmin is pictured up to his chest in penumbra. He looks into the camera from above in half-profile. He wears a white T-shirt, a long white beaded necklace over it, a full beard, sunglasses, and a blue headdress with white and black embroidery. The mouth is closed. The background is a reddish-brown wooden wall.
