Vaovao has her dark hair strictly combed back and wears a chignon at the back of her head. Her hair is completely covered by a beige hairnet. She stands in front of an unplastered, light-colored wall and looks to the right out of the picture. Her upper body can be seen from diagonally behind until just below her shoulder. She is wearing a black bra, of which the straps can be seen. Her back and shoulder are bare.

Vaovao

Vaovao means »new« in Malagasy – one of the languages that Cologne-based musician Hanitra Wagner grew up with. Many things are new here: it is Wagner’s first solo music project (besides involvement in Ωracles and Die Heiterkeit) in which the multi-instrumentalist plays an executive role, finally determining for herself where the musical journey leads. This journey leads through synthesiser sounds and sonic collages, supported by fragmentary violins, propelling beats and highly-reserved vocals. The German lyrics are sometimes dadaistic, revealing pieces of narratives and movements, literary oscillations and vibrations that serve to challenge. Rather than delineating itself, the music floats freely. Because the journey doesn’t end; the journey is its own reward. And we’re happy to tag along.
