Pop-Kultur 2022: Accessibility, inclusion and Germany’s first »INKLUTHEK«

The newsletter in simple language

Pop-Kultur is a festival for everyone!
That’s why accessibility and inclusion are important to us again this year.
It has been said:
Pop-Kultur is »Berlin’s most accessible festival«.
We are happy about that!
That’s why we continue working on inclusion.
So that all people can be part of art and culture.
These things are important:

  • The festival must be easily accessible to everyone.
  • The programme must be without barriers.
  • Artists with disabilities are part of the festival.

For us, that is part of a good festival.

We are pleased to introduce you to a new big part of our work:
The INKLUTHEK.

Germany’s first INKLUTHEK is online!
The INKLUTHEK is the accessible media library of Pop-Kultur.
That means:
You can find videos there.

In 2020 and 2021, many works at Pop-Kultur were only available on the internet.
Because of the Corona pandemic.
Accessibility is important on the internet, too.
That’s why we worked with experts.
They made many of the videos accessible.

What does that mean exactly?

This means:

  • There are 27 music videos with image descriptions.
  • There are 7 videos with German sign language.
  • There are 5 Deaf Performances.
A Deaf Performance is art by a deaf artist using sign language to perform on the stage.
  • There are 4 talks with experts on inclusion and culture.
  • There are many videos with subtitles.
This means that you can read everything that is said in the video.
  • And there are explanatory videos in simple language.

The »Inkluthek« is unique.
There has never been anything like it in Germany before.
The »Inkluthek« is the first internet site for accessible pop music.

Here you can find the »Inkluthek«.
We hope you have a lot of fun!

There are more questions, though:

How good are we at inclusion?

Last year at Pop-Kultur there was »Studio 21«.
In this area of the festival there were many concerts by inclusive bands.
And how is it this year?
We were told:
There are very few inclusive bands.
We have many questions about this:

  • Where are the artists with disabilities?
  • What makes a band inclusive?
  • Do we need a disability quota in our programme?
That would mean, at least some of the artists at the festival must be people with disabilities.
  • Who do we turn to?
    Who can help us?
  • And why is it mainly people without disabilities who decide on the question:
    What is good art?
What is a good cultural offering?

We have dealt with these questions while planning the festival this year.
We notice again and again: There is a need for more inclusion in the field of art and culture.
We still have a lot of catching up to do.

Only then can people with disabilities have equal rights in the field of art and culture.
In the audience.
On the stage.
And behind the scenes.

That’s what we want to achieve in the future.
That’s why we are now working even more closely with people with disabilities.
They are experts in their own rights.
They support us with workshops.
With advice.
And with contacts to various groups and associations.
So that we can answer these questions together.

That’s why there are 2 talks with experts in the programme.
It is about visibility and invisibility of people with disabilities in cultural work.

Conversation about the invisibility of people with disabilities
Sometimes, having the best of intentions isn’t good enough!
Our conversation event is called »Please more DisCo!«.
DisCo is short for Disabled Community.
The professionals in the conversation are people from inclusive cultural work.
We want to discuss with each other:
Why are people with disabilities excluded in many places?
Why can’t they have their say and participate in decisions in many places?

Friday, 26.8.2022 | 17:30 – 18:30, Haus für Poesie
(with translation into German Sign Language)
Conversation about the visibility of people with disabilities
People with disabilities are often told,
»You inspire me so much.
You are a role model!
It’s great that you’re successful despite your disability.«

People with visible disabilities hear these and other phrases again and again.
That is why our discussion round is called »Not your inspiration«.
We will deal with the questions:

  • Are people with disabilities exploited by such questions and ideas?
  • What can we do about it?

Friday, 26.8.2022 | 19:00 – 20:00, Haus für Poesie
(with translation into German Sign Language)

And what else can you expect?

Deaf Performance by Mila Hergert
A Deaf Performance is art by a deaf artist using sign language.
Deaf Performance is still relatively new in the programme of Pop-Kultur.
This year we will show Deaf Performances again.
We are working together with the German Deaf Association.

The deaf artist Mila Hergert has made a work especially for Pop-Kultur.
It gives a good insight into sign poetry.
That means poetry with sign language, instead of writing or speaking.

After the Deaf Performance, the artist and the team will talk together.
They will talk about how this work for Pop-Kultur came about.

Wednesday, 24.8.2022 | 19:20 – 20:20, Kino in der Kultur-brauerei (Kino 8)
(with translation into German Sign Language)

Graf Fidi live at Pop-Kultur
Graf Fidi is very well known.
We have hoped for a long time that he could perform at Pop-Kultur.
This year, it has finally worked out.

Graf Fidi is a rapper and presenter.
And he stands up for inclusion.
And he shows:
Even as a person with a physical disability, you can want to do anything.

Graf Fidi lives in Berlin.
He has been rapping for more than 20 years.
His motto: It is normal to be different.

Thursday, 25.8.2022 | 21:20 – 22:00, Kino in der Kulturbrauerei (Kino 3)
